As a teacher there is a never-ending obligation to inspire the student with ‘clear explanation’ being the key element. So with that in mind in 2009 I set off on what became an exhausting four year quest that resulted in my first book Practical Grooves for the Working Drummer. The idea behind the book was to create a comprehensive manual that would serve as a useful resource for both students and teachers alike - basically it’s all in one book.

So what’s in the book? Pretty much everything you need to set you on the road as a day-to-day drummer in the 21st Century. This is all realistic, relevant and practical stuff. Musical genres covered include:
Rock, Funk / R&B, Latin American, Afro-Cuban, New Orleans, Swing, Soul, Blues, Country, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Disco, Reggae, Punk, Grunge, Fusion and contemporary styles such as Drum & Bass, Jungle and Hip Hop.
The book also contains numerous conceptual chapters including:
• Rudiments • Independence Exercises • Brush Techniques • Odd-Time Concepts •Displacement • Polyrhythms • GrooveBuilding
• Double Bass Drum Grooves • Advanced Fills • Studio Techniques • Solo Ideas • Classic Transcriptions
Virtually every example is recorded on the accompanying CD.
